Where can I take a course or training on artificial intelligence?

You take a course on artificial intelligence through three routes: free online introductions, paid online courses with a certificate or a training for your team on your own work. The first two teach you what AI is; the third teaches your team when to trust the outcome and what must never go into an AI tool. Below: which route fits when, what the AI Act asks of employers and what a training costs.

Where can I take online courses on artificial intelligence?

Online courses on artificial intelligence are found in three places: free introductions from universities and from the makers of the AI models themselves, paid course platforms with a certificate and trainers who give a training on your own work. For a first picture free is enough; for a team that works with it daily it is not. Choose a course on three points. Is it current: anything from before 2024 describes a different world. Is it practical: you want to practise on your own kind of work, not just watch. And does it say something about safety: what you do and do not put into a tool. A course that only shows what is possible and not what goes wrong is an advertisement. Also adjust your expectation: an online course gives understanding, not judgement. Judgement only forms when you apply it to your own work and someone shows you your mistakes.

What is the difference between an online AI course and an AI training for your team?

An online course teaches one person what AI is and how the tools work. A team training teaches a group what that means for their own work: which tasks they can hand over, when not to trust the outcome and what must never go in. The biggest difference is that a training is about judgement, not buttons. Everyone learns to type a prompt in an afternoon. What does not come by itself: recognising that an answer sounds certain but is made up, knowing that a customer file does not belong in a free tool and agreeing who uses which tools. You have to discuss that as a team, with your own examples on the table. That is why a training should be about the team's own work.

What does a team learn in an AI training from Datawonder?

What the technology can and cannot do, how to work with it safely and where you gain in your own work. It is not about buttons but about judgement: when do you trust the outcome, when not and what must never go into an AI tool. We work with the work the team already does: a quote, a customer email, an internal document. That is what we practise on and where the questions that really matter come from. A day for a small team sits at the bottom of the price range; a programme for directors and management, where the questions are about policy, liability and the AI Act, at the top. Afterwards, agree with your team what is allowed, what is not and what is only allowed under conditions.

Is AI training mandatory under the AI Act?

Since February 2025 the AI Act requires organisations to ensure their employees know enough about AI, in proportion to how they use it. No specific course is prescribed; what is required is that you can show what you have done. That obligation is in Article 4 of the regulation and applies to every organisation that uses AI systems, so also to a three-person office using a chat assistant. What is enough depends on what you do: a team that only has texts summarised needs a different basis than a team that uses AI in decisions about customers. Record who has followed which training and which agreements apply. That is not legal fireworks, it is administration someone has to write down once.

What does an AI training cost?

A training usually costs between €1,750 and €8,000, depending on group size, level and audience: a day for a small team sits at the bottom, a programme for directors and management at the top. Compare that with what a free online course costs: nothing, apart from your people's hours and the risk that everyone does something different afterwards. A training is only worth it if your team uses or will use AI daily. If you do not use it anywhere yet, an AI audit is the better first step: it tells you where AI delivers something in your business and where it does not. If you then build with me, the audit amount is deducted from the first invoice.

How do you choose an AI course for yourself as a business owner?

Choose a course that lets you practise on your own work, that was made in 2025 or later and that explicitly covers what not to put into an AI tool. Start free and only move to paid once you know which question you want answered. Most business owners do not need a course on how AI works but an answer to the question which chore in their business qualifies first. You learn that faster by tracking for a week which tasks recur and how much time they take than through a module on neural networks. The quickscan on this site shows in ten questions which rules apply to you; the article on which process to automate first gives the scorecard.

The short version

Free online for understanding, paid online for a certificate, a team training for judgement on your own work. Since February 2025 the AI Act asks for demonstrable AI knowledge among employees. A training usually costs between €1,750 and €8,000; if you do not use AI anywhere yet, start with an audit.
